INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the world of corm splitting! While this method has gained popularity in the U.S. recently, it has been the industry standard for years among expert growers in Thailand. This guide outlines the successful methods that we have tested and refined. While many claim to be "the first," our goal is simply to share the best information available to help our fellow collectors and customers succeed.

⚠️ WARNING: Cutting corms is a high-risk, high-reward technique. It is an advanced way to hone variegation and multiply your collection rapidly.

🔪 PHASE 1: THE CUT

Precision and sanitation are the keys to preventing rot before you begin.

  • SIZE MATTERS: Do not split a corm smaller than your pinky nail. The smaller the corm, the higher the risk of failure.
  • PREPARATION: Peel the husk entirely to expose the clean flesh. Ensure the corm is solid and free of brown spots or soft rot.
  • STERILIZATION: Use a sterile blade (individually wrapped medical-grade surgical blades are recommended). Sterilize with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol between every cut.
  • THE "TAIL": Trim the tail off the bottom of the corm to minimize bacterial entry points.
  • IDENTIFY THE "EYES": These are the dormant lateral buds (small bumps).
  • THE SPLIT: Cut from top to bottom. Each piece must contain at least one eye and a portion of the top "crown" where the plant sprouts.
  • THE DNA: All genetic information and growth energy are stored in the eye and the sprout tip.
  • ACTIVE GROWTH: You can split corms that have active roots or sprouts, provided the cut is equal.
  • BLIND CORMS: If a corm has no visible eyes, it should not be split.

🧪 PHASE 2: THE DUAL-STAGE SOAK

Use distilled or filtered water only.

STEP 1: STERILIZATION

STEP 2: ACTIVATION

Products: choose one - Arbor, Mancozeb, Physan, or Hydrogen Peroxide

Products: choose one - Liquinox B-1 (gold standard), Clonex, or Rapid Start

Ratio: 1/4 tsp per 2 cups water if using Arbor or Mancozeb; if using an alternate product follow the label’s directions or dilute at your discretion.

Ratio: 1/2 tsp per 2 cups water if using Liquinox; if using an alternate product, follow the label’s directions or dilute at your discretion.

Duration: Soak 3–5 Minutes

Duration: Soak 15–20 Minutes

 

🏗️ PHASE 3: SPROUTING STRATEGIES

Choose one Option below. Do not add extra products to the final propagation water.  We prefer and use Option C.

  • OPTION A: THE PUDDLE METHOD
    • Setup: Place corms cut-side up in a 2 oz. condiment cup.
    • Water: Add only 3–5 drops of water to the inside outer groove of the cup.  The corm should not be sitting in a pool; the goal is high humidity, not saturation.  Ideally, use a puddle pad and fill water just below the screen.
    • Final Touch: Apply one spritz of Clonex Mist, seal the lid, and place in a dark area at 72–80°F.
  • OPTION B: THE STRATUM METHOD
    • Setup: Use damp (not wet) Fluval Stratum in a 2 oz condiment cup.  The beads should be dark but move freely without sticking together.
    • Placement: Place corms cut-side up at a slight angle to keep the "eye" from sitting directly on the damp medium.
    • Environment: Place in a domed cup in a dark area at 80-85°F.
  • OPTION C: THE THAI METHOD
    • Placement: Place cuts cut-side down to fully expose the eye.
    • Environment: Utilize high heat (85–87°F) to force rapid sprouting.

⚠️ RULES FOR SUCCESS

  • NEVER BURY: The corm needs access to the air and vapor within the container.
  • THE 7-DAY RULE: DO NOT open the container or touch the corms for the first 7–10 days. This preserves the micro-climate.
  • POST-SPROUT CARE: Once sprouted, "burp" the container for 30 seconds daily for air exchange.

🩺 TROUBLESHOOTING

  • MANAGING ROT: Don’t Panic. If mushy, trim rot away and sprinkle with Rhizo-Lock. Alternatively, you may try a quick re-soak in fungicide or a gentle exfoliation with outdoor dirt/sand to remove mush.
  • CONDENSATION: Tilt the container so water rolls down the side rather than dripping on the corm.
  • FAILURE REASONS: Saturated medium (too wet), too cold (need a minimum of 70°F to break dormancy), not providing airflow once leaves appear.

One of the most beautiful things about growing corms is that there truly is no “one size fits all” approach.  What works perfectly for one person’s environment might need a little tweaking in yours, and that’s perfectly normal!  Think of this process as a personal experiment.  If a corm doesn’t take, please remember: a loss is not a failure; it’s simply knowledge gained.  Every loss is an opportunity to refine your method until you find the one that clicks for your unique environment.
