Variegation is what turns a beautiful Alocasia into a grail — but the terms get thrown around a lot. Here's a clear, collector-friendly breakdown of the main types you'll see in our collection, and an honest word on stability.
Albo (white variegation)
"Albo" means white. Albo variegation shows up as crisp, snow-white sectors, marbling, or blocks where the leaf produces no chlorophyll at all. It's the most dramatic and often the most coveted look — think high-contrast white against deep green. Because those white sections can't photosynthesize, they're also more delicate (prone to sunburn) and the pattern is the least predictable.
Aurea (golden/yellow variegation)
"Aurea" means golden. Instead of white, these plants push warm yellow-to-gold sectors and marbling. Aurea variegation tends to be a touch more forgiving than albo (the pigmented tissue still does a little work) and gives a glowing, sun-kissed effect that photographs beautifully. One lovely quirk: aurea coloring often needs time to “burn in” — fresh leaves can emerge softer or greener and then deepen into richer gold as the plant settles in, and bright, indirect light can help the color intensify over time.
Pink variegation
The breakout star of recent years. Pink variegation ranges from soft blush sectors to bold rosy blocks, often most vivid on new growth. It's stunning — and, like albo, pink variegation is a delicate genetic quirk that can shift over time, which is exactly why a strongly pink plant is so prized.
Mint, marble, and "galaxy"
You'll also see softer, speckled, or dusted patterns described as mint, marble, or galaxy. These tend to be more stable than sectoral albo/pink because the variegation is distributed more finely across the leaf.
Why variegation is never guaranteed to continue
Most Alocasia variegation is chimeric — it arises from a mix of genetically different cells in the plant, not a simple inherited trait. That means a plant (or a corm's future growth) can shift over time: it might revert to plain green, or occasionally push an all-white leaf that can't sustain itself. This is normal, it happens to even the best specimens, and it's why we photograph every established plant exactly as it ships and why we never guarantee future variegation on corms.
